As a young minority female professional, I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to take their career to the next level. This book explained all my long-time confusions around why I believe I have the expertise and experience to do the job but not being taken seriously at a more senior level or be trusted with a job at that level. This book just bridged the gap!My first hand experience is a solid proof that this book did the magic and really worked for me! I learned about I'm lacking "executive presence" from a networking meeting with a senior finance executive in the industry. Not quite fully understood what it means, I did some research on Amazon and bought the book. Turned out it's the best $12.24 I've ever spent! The book indeed focus more around women and minorities, which are exactly what I was looking for, and it has plenty real life examples, statistics and actionable advice. It mentioned a lot of common pitfalls that no one in your office will mention to you about. That's what makes this book valuable. I adopted advice from this book and I applied it to a series of interviews for a job which explicitly requires "executive presence" at a prominent tech company. My performance during the interview process blew the whole team away and I got this high-paying job that took my career to a whole new level! This is totally life changing! I can't do it without tips learned from this book. ROI is huge!The only complaint I had about this book is that the book uses a lot of old English, which makes it a bit hard to read, especially that English is my second language. But my Kindle makes it convenient for me to look up those odd words. Still it's not a deal breaker. Just a heads-up.
I initially hesitated to purchase this book, since I have a scepticism towards most of the self-help/management genre. I am very glad I picked this book up. It brims with pragmatic advice on the essential topic of Executive Presence. This book is not just for those pursuing positions of power in corporate board rooms. It is for anyone seeking to translate their hard earned merit into just rewards and career progression.Hewlett artfully balances personal reflection and anectode with relevant case studies and hard data to provide a credible and highly readable volume. She does not shirk from the tough issues faced by many in developing their executive presence.I came away from the book with a number of practical ideas that I incorporated into my engagement with stakeholders and the board level. Early indicators show encouraging results!I also found the sections that specifically addressed women to be extremely valuable. As a male responsible for the professional development of female team members, these insights will enable me to support them more effectively and be a better sponsor in terms of their progression. And yes, I have recommended the book to them as important reading.
When the book started it leaned heavily on looks and while the book makes its point, I felt it was beating a dead horse mentioning looks several times. I gave it 4 stars because there’s a lot of usable content. Some attributes I feel were rushed. Some parts went from one vignette to another to another teach us about the principles of EP except I was getting lost in what principle was being focused on. Felt similar at times. In general, worth the read.
If you're completely clueless about EP, then this book might be worth your time. However, if you actively think about these thibgs but have issues applying them, you'd better spend your time doing something else. The book is built mostly on anecdotes and opinion polls with senior managers. However, this approach assumes that they know what they value which is quite unlikely. The author is clearly a fan of story telling but what may work well in a lecture becomes shallow in book form. In essence, the actual content in this book would easily fit into an article rather than a book.
I would highly reccomend this book! I actually came across this because one of the companies I was applying to reccomend I read this. I wanted to work there so badly, I ordered this book the same day! It arrived within a day and I quickly began reading before my next round of interviews with the same company. It was not a long read, and I was actually very invested in this book so took me about 2 days to finish.That being said there so many key points that I never paid much attention to that I’ve definitely improved on. This book landed me the very job I got this book because. Even the interviewers noticed a bit of a change and were impressed.I’m glad I got this book and already reccomended all my friends! They’re currently borrowing it now.
